The Preferences dialog configures how Mapsoft Redactor behaves during markup and redaction. Settings are organized into three tabs: General, Markup, and Redacting. You can save and load named profiles to quickly switch between different configurations.
| Setting | Description |
|---|---|
| Create New Document | When enabled, redaction output is saved to a new PDF file, leaving the original document unchanged. When disabled, redaction modifies the document in place. |
| Generate Log File | When enabled, a log file is created during redaction operations, recording each action taken. |
| Log File Path | The folder and file name for the log file. Click Browse to select a location. |
| HTML Log | When enabled, the log file is generated in HTML format for easier reading in a web browser. When disabled, the log is plain text. |
Tip
Enable Create New Document for safety, especially during initial redaction work. This preserves the original document in case the redaction needs to be revised.
| Setting | Description |
|---|---|
| Markup Color | The color used for redacting annotation rectangles. Click the color button to change. This color is visible in the document while annotations are being reviewed, before redaction is executed. |
| Font Filter | When enabled, markup operations only process text that matches the specified font criteria. This is useful for targeting specific text styles (e.g., only body text, not headers). |
| Font Family | When font filter is enabled, only text in this font family is considered for markup (e.g., "Arial", "Times New Roman"). |
| Font Size Min | Minimum font size (in points) for the font filter. Text smaller than this is excluded from markup. |
| Font Size Max | Maximum font size (in points) for the font filter. Text larger than this is excluded from markup. |
Note
The font filter applies to dictionary and pattern markup operations. It does not affect template or manual drawing markup.
| Setting | Description |
|---|---|
| Redact Character | The character used to replace redacted text in the output (e.g., "X" or a block character). Leave empty to simply remove the text without a replacement character. |
| Add Exemption Codes | When enabled, the exemption code associated with each annotation is overlaid on the redacted area in the output document. |
| Fill with Color | When enabled, the redacted area is filled with the specified fill color. When disabled, the area is left blank (white). |
| Fill Color | The background color of the redacted area. Click the color button to change. Black is the traditional redaction color. |
| Stroke Color | The border color drawn around the redacted area. Click the color button to change. |
| Exemption Font | The font used to display exemption code text on redacted areas (e.g., "Arial", "Helvetica"). |
| Exemption Font Size | The font size (in points) for exemption code text displayed on redacted areas. |
Profiles let you save a complete set of preferences under a name and reload them later. This is useful when different projects or document types require different redaction settings.
Click Save Profile to save the current preferences under a named profile. You will be prompted to enter a name and optional description. The profile stores all settings from all three tabs, plus any active pattern selections and dictionary/template associations.
Click Load Profile to select a previously saved profile and apply its settings to the dialog. All three tabs are updated to reflect the loaded profile's values.
Tip
Create profiles for common workflows: e.g., "FOIA Release" (black fill, exemption codes enabled), "Internal Review" (red markup, no fill, create new document), or "Batch Processing" (log enabled, HTML format).
