Overview
Sort Bookmarks reorders the bookmarks in your PDF based on title text, destination page number, or date patterns found in bookmark titles. You can sort the entire bookmark tree or limit sorting to specific levels, and choose ascending or descending order.
How to use
- Open a PDF that contains bookmarks.
- Go to Plug-Ins > Bookmarks > Sort Bookmarks.
- Select a sort method from the dropdown.
- Choose the scope (all levels, first level only, or a specific level range).
- Set the sort direction and any additional options.
- Click OK to apply the sort.
Sort methods
| Method | Description |

| Alphabetical | Sorts bookmarks by their title text. Enable Ignore case to treat uppercase and lowercase letters as equal. |
| By Page Number | Sorts bookmarks by the page their destination points to. Useful for ensuring bookmarks follow the document's reading order. |
| By Date (DD/MM/YYYY) | Parses dates in bookmark titles using day-month-year format and sorts chronologically. |
| By Date (MM/DD/YYYY) | Parses dates in bookmark titles using month-day-year format and sorts chronologically. |
Scope
| Option | Description |

| All levels | Sorts every bookmark in the tree, regardless of depth. |
| First level only | Sorts only the top-level bookmarks. Child bookmarks remain in their original order. |
| Level range | Sorts bookmarks within a specific range of levels. Enter levels as a comma-separated
list or range, e.g. 1,2,3-5. |
Additional options
| Option | Description |
|---|---|
| Ascending / Descending | Controls the sort direction. Ascending is A–Z or lowest page first; descending is Z–A or highest page first. |
| Ignore case | When checked, treats “Chapter” and “chapter” as equal during alphabetical sorting. |
| Sort children | When checked, recursively sorts child bookmarks within each parent branch, not just the bookmarks at the selected level. |
Tip
Use By Page Number sorting after inserting or removing pages to quickly restore bookmarks to document order.
Note
Sorting changes the order of bookmarks only — it does not modify bookmark destinations or any other bookmark properties. Date sorting requires consistent date formatting across bookmark titles to work correctly.
