Getting Started

Please read the following instructions to help you get started using BookMarker.

Try a Small Document First

Open a copy of a PDF with several consistent headings. Follow the first-level instructions below, generate bookmarks, and check that each bookmark points to the expected heading. Save and reopen the copy to check the result.

Installation

Please make sure that you have the full version of Acrobat running, or at least a demo version. This plug-in will not run under the free Adobe Reader. The plug-in becomes part of Adobe Acrobat, so once the software is installed you will need to open Adobe Acrobat to use it.

To install the software:

• Step 1: Extract the installer from the zip file that you have downloaded. In Windows you probably won't have to extract the installer as the zip file will open just like a folder.
• Step 2: Run the Mapsoft_Bookmarker_Install.exe file by double clicking on it. On some systems that are more restricted you may need to run the installer as Administrator (right-click and select "Run as administrator" from the context menu). Do not change the user to an Administrator account to complete the installation.
• Step 3: Follow the installer prompts, then open the plug-in in Acrobat. For the current release, use the in-app trial or activation dialog. If an older installer asks for a serial number, enter your purchased key or Demo for evaluation.

Deployment with Older Serial-Based Installers

The installer supports silent mode for automated or scripted deployments. Use the /VERYSILENT flag along with the /Serial parameter to provide the serial number:

Mapsoft_Bookmarker_Install.exe /VERYSILENT /Serial=YOUR_SERIAL_NUMBER

For these older installers, /Serial=Demo selects tryout mode. Contact support with your installer version before planning a deployment of a newer build.

Using the Software

Once the plug-in is installed and you load Acrobat, you will find BookMarker on the Plug-ins > Mapsoft menu.

The main BookMarker window is a floating window, so you do not need to close it down to navigate through your PDF file. You can access the User Guide for BookMarker via the Help menu on the main BookMarker window.

Creating Your First Level

• Step 1: Make sure that you have the document open that you want to bookmark.
• Step 2: Make sure that you have the text copy tool active in Acrobat.
• Step 3: Select some of the text containing the style that you want to use for defining the bookmark level.
• Step 4: Select the Add button in the BookMarker window to define your first level.

If Settings Do Not Save

Contact support@mapsoft.com with your plug-in version, Acrobat version and the setting that is not being retained. Use guidance for your specific version before changing Acrobat security settings.
